What makes Detroit Legacy Tours different?
Detroit Legacy Tours offers research-based walking tours that explore the city’s architecture, neighborhoods, urban planning history, music legacies, industry, Underground Railroad history, and overlooked historical figures. Tours are designed for visitors and locals seeking a deeper understanding of Detroit beyond traditional sightseeing.
Who are these tours for?
Tours are designed for adults – anyone curious about Detroit’s real history rather than a corporate-scripted sightseeing version – including its architecture, music, civil rights, and urban renewal stories.
How long are the tours?
Most tours last between two and two and a half hours. Over 1.5 miles of walking is required – typically at a modest pace – and walking is done on uneven surfaces, city streets, and sidewalks.
What neighborhoods are covered?
The core Downtown Detroit tour covers the heart of downtown and some of the historic Black Bottom and Greektown neighborhoods. The Downtown plus Paradise Valley tour starts downtown, and then it ventures to Paradise Valley, where Ford Field and Comerica Park now stand. Other tours may differ in location, depending on the focus.
Why choose a walking tour instead of a bus tour?
A walking tour puts you right where the history happened — you’re not viewing a building through a bus window; you’re standing on the block where the story unfolded. Covering just over 1.5 miles at a modest pace, it gives you time to actually absorb and reflect on what you’re hearing, and the flexibility to pause, take photos, or follow a guided detour that a fixed bus route can’t offer.
Are tours suitable for first-time visitors?
Absolutely. Our tours offer something for both first-time and seasoned visitors.
Who leads the tours?
Tours are led by the owner and founder, Rod Arroyo, FAICP. With some tour companies, your tour experience may depend on the luck of the draw — who you get that day for that tour. With Detroit Legacy Tours, you will always be guided by the owner, an award-winning urban planner, researcher, and lecturer. Rod is a member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners.
Rod Arroyo and the late Karin Risko released their book, “A History Lover’s Guide to Detroit,” in 2018. They went on a book tour in early 2019 and lectured at libraries and museums, including the following:

The following is a brief summary of other lectures presented by Rod Arroyo in the past few years:
Dirty Dog Jazz Café. On September 25, 2024, Rod’s was the featured presenter for an engaging program of jazz history and live jazz. The evening started with a short set by the Michael Zaporski trio, followed by part one of Rod’s presentation. Following an intermission set by the band, Rod returned for the second half of the presentation. The Dirty Dog Jazz Café is one of the most renowned jazz clubs in Detroit, having hosted jazz legends in an intimate setting, including Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, and many more.
The Ford House. January 23, 2025. Rod presented on the grounds of the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan. The large event space with two large screens provided the perfect setting for an evening of jazz history and stories of Detroit’s Paradise Valley and Black Bottom.
Detroit Public Library, Main Branch. As part of the Detroit Public Library’s Juneteenth Celebration, Rod presented at the Main Branch of the Detroit Public Library on June 18, 2025.
Michigan Jazz Festival. July 20, 2025. The 30th Anniversary Michigan Jazz Festival was the venue for Rod’s presentation in July, 2025. This festival features seven different stages plus a Jazz Talks! room.
Michigan Jazz Festival. July 19, 2026. Rod returned to the Michigan Jazz Fesitval in 2026 to present, “Looking Back at Paradise Valley and Sugar Hill.”
